Holidays and Travel

As I said yesterday, the holiday period is in full swing, with various celebrations approaching or passed.

This year, I’m travelling elsewhere for Christmas with the family. All the preparation has reminded me of the song below, which I made up after learning of the “Aussie Jingle Bells“. As you may be able to tell, it was a retelling, through song, of my family’s Christmas journey that year.

One of the funny things about living in Australia is that, as a lot of things have a Northern Hemisphere slant, some holiday songs just don’t fit the season. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with singing the ‘traditional’ (secular) songs…..but when looking for non-religious carols, I like the ‘neutral’ (no reference to weather) or Australian-tailor-made ones better. There are plenty of those of course – you just have to find them.

So, on that front, without further ado, I present:

2009 Jingle Bells

Dashing through the outback
In a Nimbus Mitsubishi
Kicking up the dust
The others all around me
The roof-box and car are packed
With all of our stuff
Its summertime and I’m wearing
My t-shirt, skirt & skuffs

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer’s day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is great
Oh what fun it is to visit and travel interstate!

Engine’s getting hot
Dodge the roadkill
Watch for wildlife
While enjoying the view
Nana and Grumps are waiting
Sitting by the tree
Christmas day, the Aussie way
With friends and family

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer’s day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is great
Oh what fun it is to visit and travel interstate!

When we arrive
We jump to say hello
Ready to be greeted by
Hugs and “how you’ve grown!”s
We go inside, chattering away
All glad that for the next few weeks
We’re here to stay

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer’s day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is great
Oh what fun it is to visit and travel interstate! (x2)

🙂 Anyone else travelling to get to somewhere/-one this Christmas?
